Since 2010, JEM Jewellery Ethically Minded has been shaking up the world of jewelry with its ethical, sustainable collections. Dorothée Contour, its founder, proudly declares her ambition to transform the jewelry sector to make it more transparent and responsible. Her mantra? The Parisian firm’s signature material – the gold which it works with – is Fairminded-certified, a label which trains and certifies responsible artisanal and small-scale mining organizations. By committing to this segment, JEM chose to work with ethical gold, gold which respects human beings, nature and its customers, who are ever-more concerned about the origins of materials.
It was this quest for meaning which JEM pursued in its consideration of diamonds. Although the desire to propose stone-set creations became quickly obvious, the firm still had to choose the “right” supplier. Instead of choosing the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), whose guarantees the firm’s creator believed were open to improvement, she favored diamonds from the Diamond Foundry. This San Francisco-based state-of-the-art laboratory is one of the world’s leaders in the synthetic diamond market and one of its investors is a certain Leonardo Di Caprio. A powerful argument which has enabled the company to enjoy a comfortable reputation since its creation.
Through this partnership, JEM has treated itself to the luxury of a new-generation diamond: an exceptional stone assessed by the same standards as the natural diamond’s 4Cs, yet not tainted by any mining danger. A diamond whose most exquisite dazzle is that of its transparency. It was therefore only natural to embrace it with an original variation from the Octogone collection, the firm’s emblematic line.
