In January 2015, Elie Top introduced his eponymous brand along with his first collection named Mécaniques Célestes available to see in his showroom on appointment only located in a private apartment of Rue Saint-Honoré decorated by his friend and talented architect designer Vincent Darré.
Top, best known as the jewelry designer for Lanvin, decided after a long apprenticeship for major fashion houses that it was time to have his work shown under his name. Following his desire for self-expression, the Parisian designer conceives a new kind of jewelry, far away from the Place Vendome’s classicism. Playful high jewelry pieces made of signature statement looks, inspired by costume jewelry tradition (regarding the imposing style) but especially antique astronomical clocks and celestial measuring instruments.
What commands his cosmos theme? According to him, the collection bears the name of a book devoted to celestial mechanics, almost scientific objects involving an architectural approach that he is fond of. Indeed, as a child, Elie Top was obsessed with churches and castles from the Baroque period he tried to replicate with precise drawings. Born in the north of France, he has also been influenced by industrial landscape of steel mills.
Many sources of inspiration but one passion for sketching that leads him to studying Fashion in Paris. Graduated from the School of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture, Elie Top got an internship at Saint Laurent at the age of 19 and met Alber Elbaz when he arrived at Yves Saint Laurent to create the prêt-à-porter.
The last official assistant of Yves Saint Laurent has known the Haute Couture in a way that no longer exists: thousands of fabrics, time to experiment…a creative cocoon that he maybe wants to recreate through his eponymous brand. No more fashion week race and seasonal calendar rules, only time to let his ideas mature and impulse the collection.
Enter the magical world of Elie Top in which he invents and interprets in his own way a sophisticated galaxy made of spheres, stars and signs of the zodiac, in which woman shines at the center. Try to escape and he will get you right back at him.
