John Rubel : The Rebirth

Sophie Mizrahi-Rubel revives a wonderful family history initiated by her great uncles, Jean & Robert and then by her grandfather Marcel, a famous diamond dealer. The brothers arrived in Paris from Budapest in 1915, where they opened the doors of their first atelier close to the Place Vendôme. Very quickly, they started creating and producing collections for the most renowned jewelers.

In 1939, after Van Cleef & Arpels opened in New York, the Rubel brothers were entrusted to manufacture their jewelry. This is how their American venture stated with the opening of the RUBEL atelier in Manhattan.

Caught up in the New York Life, John and Robert drew their inspiration from the personalities they encountered. In 1940, John designed the silhouette of a flamenco dancer on a tablecloth during a Latin evening, the first of a series of ballerinas, immediately adopted by Van Cleef,

In 1942, the brand JOHN RUBEL was born, and their first shop opened at 777 Fifth Avenue. Their creations were of a unique avant-garde style that was recognized and desired by the world. Today, the jewelry is still highly prized by collectors and international auction houses.

Sophie Mizrahi-Rubel, who worked for some of the greatest names in Fine Jewelry, discovered in 2012 in the attic of the family home an authentic treasure: hundreds of forgotten archival material in the form of drawings, sketches, and gouaches… created by the Rubel brothers during their 20’s. The rebirth of this legendary brand was looming in her mind after it had been dormant since the 1950’s. Owner of the brand, rich from her parentage, her legacy, and the exceptional knowledge she acquired from her grandfather, Sophie is making her dream true : reviving this emblematic name in Fine Jewelry.

Sophie has decided to celebrate the centenary of JOHN RUBEL in Paris in September 2015 by presenting her first Fine Jewelry collection “Vies de Bohème.” Referring to the DNA of the brand, this feminine and voluptuous collection was inspired by the personality of remarkable women who embody the spirit of the House. Bold and vibrant creations whose key theme “dancing jewelry,” opens the doors to imagination…

Carefully selected pieces from John Rubel collections are available at The Eye of Jewelry Pop Up Store in Geneva located at the Grand Kempinski Hotel, Quai du Montblanc 19. Open Tuesday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday from 2.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. and on appointment.

John Rubel : La Renaissance
