Stephanie Deydier’s childhood was full of antiques, specifically those of Asian cultures. When she created her eponymous brand in 2011 in Paris, it was no coincidence that the theme was inspired by Asia. With a nod to her family, we see pieces incorporating pandas and kokeshi which are traditional Japanese dolls.
Her grandfather was the curator at the Vientiane Museum in Laos and her parents were ancient art collectors, specializing in Chinese art. With that upbringing, Stephanie Deydier studied Art History, which would have likely pushed her towards following in her family’s footstep. An internship in the Christie’s jewelry department gave her an appreciation and grew her passion for jewelry. A twist of fate that brought Deydier to imagine whimsical jewelry collections.
When Stephanie went to create her first line, she drew inspiration from her family. She remembered the gift of a wooden doll her father had given her. It led to the Kokeshi doll design, a pendant adorned with black diamonds, yellow sapphires and spessartites we can shop today under Yuki-Onna. We see many of these colorful designs in her The legends of Yazhou – Chapter II line in both pendants and playful rings.
Playful and unique, Deydier’s pieces seem to be taken from a fairy-tale where vivid colors mixed with materials shape imaginary characters. Her strive for innovation can be seen through her use of materials such as the mink fur used around the golden polar bear of her Nanuq Ring, from the Nuutuittuq Polar Star collection.
Her favorite gemstones? Paraiba tourmalines and spinels. Spotted in her Ninhursage Ring, she sets a Paraiba Tourmaline as the vibrant centerpiece between two kokeshi figurines. Deydier also loves to work with various gemstones such as diamonds, rubies, tourmalines, aquamarines and emeralds.
Stephanie’s design ability and creativity stand out most in her Rock your fingers line. Here we have pairings of rings that are sold together, but can be worn together or separately. This unique and fun concept is shown through flower and rose pairings; sun and moon; pearl and shells; along with other matching or cohesive pairs. This line has shown that Stephanie is able to branch out from her Asian inspiration, showing her true depth of creativity and desire to seek the rare.
