This Coromandel watch marks the essence of what the Chanel DNA takes inspiration from. Gabrielle said “Coco” decorated each of her houses with coromandel panels and even traveled at all times with one.
What is interesting about it?
Last summer, Chanel introduced their latest High Jewelry collection named Coromandel. With over 50 one of a kind pieces, this collection draws inspiration from Gabrielle Chanel’s love of the Asian coromandel. A coromandel is a wooden screen panel that has been covered in dark lacquer, most often combining black, bordeaux and chocolate brown colors. Intricate designs of flora, fauna and magical landscapes are then carved into these screens, with red, gold and white colored pigment added. Coco Chanel was fond of these screens she would put some in each of her houses, supposedly owning up to 30 at one point in time. Many of her homes were decorated with these screens, and she even traveled with them! Four of these Coromandel High Jewelry pieces are watches, with one of our favorites being the Fleur de Laque!
Why did we choose it?
The Fleur de Laque watch has a gorgeous color palette of black, white and gold, very representative of the coromandel screens Coco loved. The floral design is a perfect match for those that you’d see on these screens, comprised of black lacquer and mother of pearl. The bracelet of the watch is so elegant, with cultured pearls and an additional delicate bracelet of diamonds. This piece can be worn daily, both with jeans and with an evening attire! Coco loved looking at her coromandel screens and dreaming of exotic landscapes, floras and animals. Much like her desire to take these screens with her everywhere, you too can now carry a wonderful piece of the coromandel with you everyday!
